Domestic Violence and Abuse 'makes social work professionals freeze'

Consultant Social Worker (CSW)  is a new role intended to support the recommendations from the Munro Review of Child Protection (2011, see the Resources section of this website), with CSW's acting as guides and support for lesser qualified social work staff.

In Wales, CSW's have identified that domestic violence and abuse is an area where staff feel 'adrift', without a clear model or effective skills to work safely and productively.

Dr Mark Farrall is acting as an informal consultant to the new CSW network in Wales, supporting evidence-informed, effective practice. Wales has an advantage in that the Integrated Family Support Service model supported by Wlesh Government is based on the therapeutically informed skills of Motivational Interviewing.

Dr Farrall said: "The IFSS is aimed at child protection concerns triggered by substance misuse - but I hope to help the CSWs feel confident that the core MI approach provides a universal platform for engaging and facilitating change with dometsic abuse too. All of Ignition's successful domestic abuse interventions are based on MI - it is a crucial component of effective practice".
