Joint Conference on 'evidence and innovations' in intimate partner violence and abuse

In one month's time on May 9th 2014, a joint conference hosted by Ignition and the University of Coventry will see the launch of a new association for the domestic violence field, promoting effective, research based practice.

The conference will discuss how we can move beyond a purely feminist-informed analysis, building on what this brings, but integrating new understandings and ideas from gender-inclusive research.

Speakers will discuss innovative practice, including the evidence for therapeutically informed work, and why saying being male is a risk factor for domestic violence and abuse, misunderstands what risk means, and ignores research evidence.

Dr Mark Farrall, Director of Ignition, said: " We need to acknowledge that without feminist activism, very little would ever have been done about the problem of intimate partner violence. But I strongly believe that this viewpoint has begun to be a 'dead hand' of tradition, and inhibit the development of effective practice. We want to make sure that interventions are actually effective, not counter-productive".
