Launch of Effective Practice Association

Today's joint conference between Ignition and the Violence and Interpersonal Aggression research unit of the University of Coventry concluded with support from the audience for forming an association dedicated to developing evidence-based practice in the domestic abuse field.

Dr Mark Farrall and Dr Erica Burman said: "No-one can disagree with trying to ensure practice is as effective as possible, based on evidence. We hope to influence and inform commissioners and practitioners as to what this evidence is".

The conference demonstrated the need for a greater focus on research and evidence-based practice as presentations suggested that the main risk assessment used by the police (the CAADA-DASH) is not based on research and may be ineffective; that one-to-one mentoring with high-risk men can be effective and should not be automatically discounted; and that lessons can and should be learned from the therapy world.

Next steps are to develop an agenda for actions and decide on a name for the association!
