Intimate Partner Violence & Abuse

Perpetrator work: male, female and couples

Ignition intimate partner violence and abuse programmes are research and evidence-based:

  • Abusive behaviours are not gender-specific, though there may be gendered effects
  • Abusive behaviours vary widely in frequency, harm and direction
  • Victim and perpetrator roles can be fluid
The Gender Inclusive Continuum

Ignition programmes package up and transfer skills to agencies to deliver safe, therapeutically-informed, effective work on abuse and violence in intimate relationships.

The programmes are relevant to community and prison settings, with convicted or non-convicted participants, male or female, to build motivation for change, and develop non-abusive behaviours and thinking.

Relate: Choosing to Change

This is a brief one-to-one motivational programme developed specifically for and in use with Relate England.

It is aimed at men identified by Relate processes as the 'primary aggressor', but who are not taking sufficient responsibility to enable a referral to couples work.

...a coherent programme with a clear therapeutic approach which demonstrably works and is effective.

Delegate from Relate

I have thoroughly enjoyed the course. It provides a challenging way of working that is also useful in other areas of therapy.

Ignition: Engagement

Engagement and formation of a working relationship, developing an individual's own motivation for change, are crucial to successful outcomes.

Ignition: Engagement enhances motivation and begins the process of moving to action and goal setting. Three programme variants are available, combining Motivational Interviewing with subject-specific materials to work with:

  • Male perpetrators
  • Female perpetrators
  • 'Bi directional' couple work

Ignition: Engagement is available in one-to-one and group format. It can act as a 'stand alone' motivational preparation for another treatment intervention

Ignition: Treatment

The structured but flexible brief programme model builds on the motivation developed in Ignition: Engagement, enabling a worker to:

  • Build a case formulation
  • Develop a semi-tailored treatment programme
  • Meet research-based needs for this client group
  • Develop practical concrete skills
  • Develop empathy and perspective taking

The programme is extremely practical and concrete, using the meaningful and safe experiential learning methods in which Ignition are experts.
